Hallway - upper level-Swedish House

The weather continues to be wet and cold. Perfect conditions to either read or become absorbed in mini magic.

Like most miniaturists I endeavour to make or create an impression of something without incurring too much expense. This allows me to buy things that I could not possibly make.

My plan for the upper hallway was to display pictures on the wall that may help place the house as one that is in the now but carries a sense of its past. I imagine it as a renovated inherited family farmhouse on a small island off the coast of Sweden.

I checked in my supplies for a narrow picture-frame moulding to make simple frames for the pictures I had chosen.  Alas, nothing left in my collection ..... thinking, thinking ... I decided to cut cardboard and cover it with fine linen to use as a frame. I found little jump rings to which I threaded silk ribbon that attached to the linen backing.  I had a few decorative nails ... only four! Lucky for me ( note to new Miniaturists - never throw anything away!)
So now my pictures could quietly take their places in the hallway.

Down the stars you can just see the checked fancy flooring of the living/dining room. Another inexpensive - time consuming, but rewarding solution to finishing the flooring of this style of house.

As always a cup of tea keeps inspiration fuelled.

  1. I love your upper hallway with the pictures and the way you have decorated the walls. It's a very good idea to have used ribbons to hang the pictures.

  2. Hi Janine! Your pictures are Awesome! The pictures themselves are very lovely, but the frame technique you just invented is both original and perfect for this house. Beautiful work! And the glimpse of the bedroom behind the Swedish Tea mug is tantalizing in the extreme! I look forward to seeing more. :)

    1. Hi Betsy, Handy husband and I have been busy with extra 12V lighting and used a lot of LED in the kitchen. Just connected the light on the table in the bedroom but have to find something to use for lights each side of the bed. Fatima, Elizabeth and I are off to the Seattle Show at the beginning of March ... I will make a list but honestly it goes out the door as soon as I am in the room with so many minis to see and buy. I get quite dizzy! Elizabeth is no help as she has such a good eye and can see something great at 20’.
Thank you for visiting and leaving a note.

  3. What a clever and triumphant solution to the framing and hanging of the lovely hallway artwork! Tell me, are the characters Swedish royalty? I love the aviary prints, as well!
Both the decorative balcony rail and the hand rail give the stairs such a feeling of authenticity to this serene space. And then, the pop of color from the balcony doors! Just lovely!
It is fun to put the challenge in front of ourselves to use what we have and have what we use. Throwing anything away fills me with such trepidation!

    1. Hi Jodi, Who can work out why I can comment/reply one minute and not the next.
I did reply on Instagram re the “royalty” . The avian reference in pics on the wall in the hallway and also in the bedroom are a nod to Bruce who is always checking out the migrating birds with the binoculars as they visit our Bay.
The kitchen is coming along... Elizabeth visited this week and gave me some great feedback and suggestions - we had such a great day together.
      Keep well.

  4. Your second floor ancestral gallery is indeed right at home in the 'here and now', and the contented and quiet spirits of each of them, continues to permeate every cosy corner of your pastoral coastal farmhouse.
The linen frame backdrops of the portraits, anchored by the pale blue ribbons; adds just the right amount of subtle texture and colour to the overall serenity of your hallway without detracting from the raised painted mouldings on the walls.

No pressure Janine but after experiencing this tantalizing taste of Sweden: Still Craving MORE!

  5. Janine, the upstairs landing of the house is simply delightful. I am just loving the graceful simplicity of it all. The idea for the linen covered frames is just fabulous (mental note taken and stored, Thanks) and I cannot take my eyes of those three wee little bird prints on the back wall. Nice touch!

    1. Hi Anna, Hope all is well with you and yours in Victoria. I felt rather happy at how the frames turned out ... so simple ... I tried a green ribbon that matched the colour in the wall murals in the living room ... I was thinking perhaps there was too much blue going on in the house .. but it was too severe. The blue seemed just right.
The kitchen is taking my time and will be finished - I say that young-in-cheek as miniature houses continue to evolve.... then there will be the bathroom to do!

  8. Shannon, so happy to hear from you. All is well here - we have been following the Au. Fires as you may remember I have family in Qld and Daylesford.
I am presently on a roll as the weather has been very wet and apart from stirring the compost bins I cannot work in the garden .. . And boating is too miserable at this time of year.
I am enjoying bringing this house to life.
    Regards Janine
